How to choose the best driving instructor for you
Posted on by DeanHow to choose the best driving instructor for you
Learning to drive can be a particularly stressful experience, particularly if you have had little or no experience behind the wheel when commencing your driving lessons. A driving instructor shouldn’t be viewed as a one-size-fits-all – what works for some people, might not work for another person. Finding the best driving instructor Cardiff has to offer can be a tricky task, unless you start asking the right questions and following the right advice.
Ask around your friends and family
The best way to find the right driving instructor is to have one recommended to you. If one of your friends or family members has had an amazing experience with their driving instructor, it may be worth approaching them and seeing if they have a similar effect on your learning. It may be that what worked for them doesn’t work for you at all – alternatively, it may be the best thing you ever do. But let’s face it… there’s absolutely no harm in asking, is there?
Question their qualifications
You don’t want to be taught to drive off any old person – otherwise, you might as well blag a couple of freebie lessons off your older cousin! Find a driving instructor who is fully qualified and experienced in the field. Fully qualified driving instructors Cardiff or otherwise will have an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) badge – this should be displayed in the vehicle itself. If they don’t have an ADI (or a PDI, if they’re in the midsts of their training) then they can’t legally accept money off you to teach you how to drive. Anyone doing so is breaking the law.

Get a feel for an instructor’s approach before fully investing
Different driving instructors have different approaches to teaching – a driving instructor might have a style that doesn’t work for you. That doesn’t mean he/she isn’t a fantastic instructor. It just means that there’s someone out there who’s better suited to you and your needs. Finding the right instructor doesn’t have to break the bank – most instructors offer cheaper trial sessions that will allow you to get a feel for their teaching style and their personality – if you’re a bubbly, chatty person you may find that having an instructor with a similar personality style helps your learning approach. Test the waters and ensure that you’re happy with the instructor you choose – you’ll likely be spending a lot of time with them, should all go to plan.
Consider public opinion
Asking your friends and family is one way of getting an idea on the quality of a potential driving instructor but be sure to search around and see what the general public is saying. The internet is full of reviews, comments and opinions on everything you can possibly imagine – including driving instructors. Check out the Driving school or instructor’s social media pages and do some digging if you have to and find out as much as you can about the instructor and their reputation.
Don’t just choose the cheapest instructor
Choosing an instructor based on how much they charge is not the way to do it. Whilst it might be tempting to go for the cheapest option, it may well be that the cheapest instructor is cheap for a reason. It may also be the case that they don’t have the right qualifications to be teaching you, which is a definite no-no. At the same time, a more expensive instructor doesn’t necessarily mean a better instructor. Go with your gut and choose an instructor based on how you feel about their teaching style – and not how it might affect your purse strings.
